I’m originally from Detroit with my parents from Alabama and Mississippi. I’ve been living in San Diego for 7 years now and you all have helped me create my family away from family! I have church family, dance family, STEM family, and San Diego Black Professionals “meetup” family who I do life with. I’ve always been curious about the responses I’d receive when asking this: please drop me a note or comment on How We Met!
Day 2: Keep it HONEST! Leave a recommendation. w/ Felena Hanson of Hera Hub
Welcome back to Day 2! You have all been part of my journey and I am so grateful that you are here with me to Celebrate 5 years in business and the launch of my new brand Jas:Maven. One success was being honored with the Hera Hub STEAM Trailblazer Award. Another win was the Black History in Motion event for Black History Month with several African American Employee Resource Groups.
Day 3: Keep it HOT! Ask a STEAM related question on the virtual panel. w/ Courtney Dade of CSD Marketing and Consulting & Caleb with Curls
Yesterday, some of you mentioned that we first met after seeing me on a panel or a presentation. The STEAM Collaborative exists to exponentially increase equity in STEAM Education. I often have time for Questions, and usually get pretty interesting ones like “What is the coolest job you’ve had?” What is one question you would ask me if you and your child were in the audience for Q&A?
Day 4: Keep it REAL! Provide your unique solutions for problems you see in the community. w/ Chef Geoff Cole of Admirals Experience
There are so many forums, surveys and focus groups to talk about problems in the community. Jas:Maven is one solution that brings you together with The Right People to have everyone achieve their goals. To the many problems facing inequity and keeping us segregated, what is your solution?
Day 5: Keep it MOVING! Join the Five Days of Gratitude Donation Challenge! Funds go directly to programming that support and impact under-served communities. w/ Cory Morrison, Financial Planner
This has been an amazing five days together! Your responses have been thoughtful, uplifting, and authentic. Thank you for your honesty and just being you. On this final day of gratitude I’d like to humbly ask your support for continuing the conversation and taking action for improved education and unity experiences. If you would like to support The STEAM Collaborative or Jas:Maven please click to see the donation levels and directly see us pay it forward to impact others.

Mesa College is looking for those students who are craving more in the area of STEAM. We’ve partnered with Treobytes -A kids Technology Hub on two upcoming camps.
STEAM Special Projects Dates: April 6 and April 13th, 2019 Time: 9 am- 12 pm Location: San Diego Mesa College
The first is really focused on testing prototypes and understanding the design process. The Special Projects camp is really a great option for the kids that crave more than the usual student. They will work along the side of current STEM college students. This camp will be challenging no matter the base knowledge level of the students. Students will participate and provide key insights and prototype refinements.
STEAM StartUP Summer Camp Dates: June 24th- July 19, 2019 (Weekly options) Time: 9 am- 3 pm (extended hours offered) Location: San Diego Mesa College
Our second camp is for all students with creative ideas ready to develop and put into action. The days will be filled with project-based STEAM activities with a week end culminating competition and presentations. We’re also incorporating core math and literacy daily to address summer learning loss. Campers will be simulate and participate in the actual “work day” of professionals in the STEAM fields. We will have mentors and guest speakers including current college students, university and college administrators and industry professional who will share their career and pathways stories.
Sisu Academy is a new free private high school for girls in San Diego. We are launching our school design cohort Feb 11 from Malcolm X Library. We have two community events going on that we are spreading around town to invite girls and their families to help co-design the school.
What is Sisu? “Sisu”: The Finnish concept for stoic determination, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness. Sisu Academy is the first all-girls tuition-free, boarding high school, with an embedded incubator fueled by entrepreneurs and seed capital creating an immersive learning environment that funds all operational costs. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit for public good.
The registration is closed for students, but we still need technical volunteers to assist the students with building and designing the robots. The Robotics Program will take place on the campus of University of San Diego on Saturday, 12/15/18 and mentors are needed any time between 10am-5pm. If you are interested or know someone who may be, please share and complete the registration at: https://lilstar.org/2018-winter-robotics-program/
Best wishes to lilSTAR for a successful event and all you continue to do to change the students lives in Southeastern San Diego!
